The HTML 500 - Free intro to HTML/CSS for any level of knowledge. - January 24th, 2015

This might be of interest to some of you.
I am sending some of my non-coding administrative co-workers to this event. It sounds like it is suitable for people that have never touched HTML before.

The HTML500 is a one-day event where 50 of Canada’s top tech companies come together to teach you and 499 other people how to code HTML, FOR FREE. By the end of the day, you will have created your very own landing page, networked with 100 developers, and possibly even gotten hired by one of the 50 amazing companies in attendance at this massive celebration.

Reply if you are planning on going.
Maybe the VHSers can go as a group.

I signed up awhile back. Looking forward to it.

I applied, thanks for sharing.

I applied to attend.

Thanks for sharing! I have applied too

Has anyone who applied actually heard anything back. I got the email that said only the first 100 get tickets immediately and that I wasn’t in the first 100. It said the remaining 400 would be notified.

I’ve heard nothing since then.

I haven’t heard anything back since the initial email other than the usual
spam of their services…

I got mine yesterday

I got an email saying I wasn’t in the first 350 and I applied Jan 2nd.

They say they are giving many of the rest out through promotions and facebook shenanigans and I don’t know if I can be bothered to try.

Maybe I can just show up and weasel my way in, 500 people someone is likely to flake?

It seems like there needs to be a better early warning system for when events like this pop up.

Perhaps a rating system might also be useful for determining if an event is actually free and open or if scheming and nepotism might be required to get a ticket.

I was not particularly impressed when it seemed in the last day of two like a social networking campaign was required to get a ticket.

I’m fine with nepotism and sometimes prefer it as long as it is established up front.

I attended this event on Saturday. I registered months ago and arrived before 10am (for a 10:30am start). There were 50 tables (10 people / table) and every seat was full! I can only assume they deliberately overbooked and assumed some no-shows or let folks on the waitlist in early. So this was disappointing as I had to sit in the “spill over” seats at the back.

Because I was at the back it was very difficult to hear the presenters among all the other noise. They also had 700 internet connections but most people could not connect. They asked everyone to disconnect their secondary devices but I never got a connection.

When the event started there were several presentations from folks like Lighthouse Labs, Deputy Mayor of Vancouver, Telus and others (fair enough and quite interesting). The training presentation started after 11am and was finished shortly after midday. The focus was on basic HTML and CSS3.

I call myself an experience newbie and have a passing knowledge of HTML. I was familiar with this part of the course. I was pleased that they spent quite a bit of time with CSS and this was quite exciting. I was also very impressed with the editing tool that we used (brackets.io) plus Chrome.

There were two courses… create a company landing web page or create a resume web page. I chose the latter and in 2 hours I had completed all the exercises. As I wasn’t interested in the career fair, I left shortly after 2pm.

Despite the logistics issues that I experienced (many others didn’t experience these) and remembering that the event was FREE… it was a good event. It certainly provided a stepping stone to allow you to get a taste of the possible and then take things further if you choose to. (I also got free pizza and pop  )

A heavy focus of the event was to “pay it forward”. I don’t have it to hand but I will upload the training course this evening so those who could not attend can still learn and take advantage.

Regards
