SMD soldering workshop December 17/18 - USB Isolator $5 for members

I’m going to try to start running some SMD soldering workshops again. I’m starting with a repeat of the USB isolator so I can try to remember how to do this. I also have a good quantity of the isolator chips left from when the previous sponsor over ordered the parts (these are free, the cost is for the pcb and other parts).

More details on the previous workshop at SMD April - USB Isolator - Vancouver Hack Space and the project at https://www.tindie.com/products/TomKeddie/usb-isolator-pcb-only/

This time I’m also offering kits of the Adafruit isolator. This is more expensive because I have to order the isolated power supply chip and the switch.

You’ll need some magnification. This is a hand assembly workshop, there may be paste and toaster oven available.

Non members please pay the $5 surcharge, this goes to VHS. The rest of the money is to reimburse me for the non-free parts and pcbs.

Once the laser is up we can cut some cases and, with about $2 in hardware, add a nice finish.

I’m going to close tickets for this on Wednesday 9th to make sure I can get parts in time. I’m really happy we have interest and looking forward to getting back into this.

Tom, I looked at the kit on Adafruit it says $34.95. Also whats the $5 for the basic isolator at the bottom? Is that if you dont go for the Adafruit version?

Thanks

It’s complicated. I got a number of the ADUM3160 isolator chips free so we save about $10 per kit there. Adafruit is assembled so we’re saving a little there. And I didn’t put a high enough price on the adafruit option so I’ll be subsidising them a little.

The one from this workshop - SMD April - USB Isolator - Vancouver Hack Space you need to supply external power to the isolated side.

I’ve closed the adafruit option and ordered from Mouser. I have the parts for the VHS option already so people can still join.

Thanks to everyone who came out tonight. Here is a link to the case for the basic isolator.

The adafruit isolator is a custom size, file is attached. I added the cutout for the switch using lasercad just before cutting.

Thanks for hosting the workshop! It was fun! And SMD soldering isn’t that scary!

Thanks - great workshop
