SHHHH 0x22 - Super Happy Holiday Hacker House 34

Hello hackers, Tinkerers, Builders, Crafters, and Makers

In light of the recent news, we can’t just move out without getting together at the bunker one last time:

The Vancouver HackSpace is opening its doors to the general public for an open house and a Super Happy Holiday Hacker House (SH(H)HH ) 34!

Due to VHS being forced to move out, we will dedicate this edition to raise funds for the move and everything that comes into play with it. Members and the public are encouraged to organize and sell things for the greater good of the community. We’re trying to figure out the format still. Updates are to follow shortly.

Open house – (noon till 9 PM)
Never been to a hack space before? This is the perfect time to visit! We will give you the grand tour of the space. There will be a BBQ on site during the day if you want to bring something down to cook.

Super Happy Holiday Hacker House - (9 PM - Late)
SH(H)HH a social night where members and non-members are welcome to gather for conversation, beverages, lightning talks, and super happy hacking. Bring your laptops, Arduinos, crafts, and gadgets for a night of merry making!

Lightning talks – (11PM)
Lightning talk is a short presentation on any subject that you want. Unlike other presentations, lightning talks last only a few minutes (2 min or less) and several talks will happen in a single period by different speakers. Challenge coins will given out to the people doing talks. Here is a video of some of our previous lighting talks VHS Lightning Talks Video - Vancouver Hack Space

Is this still happening on December 13th?

Hell yeah!

I propose (in the absence of tools) that we turn this into a movie night. I will write up a post tonight probably.

We could watch a jolly holiday film or this…

Trailer here: Rare Exports. This Christmas everyone will believe in Santa Claus.

And Hackers. Obviously.

How about a Christmas movie like die hard

Run Lola Run?

I vote the rare exports that Janet suggested.

I agree on the Rare Exports! In fact, why not make it a Festival, and show all of them?

But is there a drinking game for it?

Debrief: I had a good time and learned some things from everyone I talked to.

The hacks were pretty minimalistic. Farrel made a sheetmetal card holder from scrap.
I made one of these thumbscrewdrivers from bits on the floor except it works even better with a wingnut.
Instructables: credit to martinboltons thumbscrewdriver from washers and bolts.

While we’re talking about minimalism, since earplugs and screws were on the floor with the bits. Here’s how to keep a screw from screwing up your pockets. I am a fan of the pill case for not treating them as disposable, and stick on a rare earth magnet to organize your change assist analyzing whether metals are ferrous or not.
