Looks like the original carriage was moved all the way to the right and the tail stock is now in front of it. The carriage is visible for a few frames on the first video. He’s is using the handle of the cross slide to hold that that massive steel bar 
The tool rest seems to be fixed to the ways somehow. Hopefully with more than that antique clamp.
