Illustration Sculpture and Hot One Inch Art Show

This is a clay sculpture I built with an inner wire armature for an illustration project at Emily Carr. It made it into the Hot One Inch show on Saturday. Check out the show, it’ll be a fun time. My husband and I both have pieces in the show and will be there for a bit.

I made it by making a wire armature with a large wooden bead for the head. I used wire from the dollar store. Then I had a little wire stick figure I could built on. Then I screwed down one foot to a piece of scrap wood. Then I covered it with bits of cloth tape and finally a layer of clay. The clay is regular modelling clay which I left fairly textured. It doesn’t dry out but it will crack if moved around. I like the texture though. The mask is a piece of felt from the dollar store. It just sticks on to the clay. Not pictured are a tiny flashlight I made out of a screw and a piece of kitchen foil. Then I photographed her to illustrate a picture book.

This was fun. Would do again.

Lately I’ve been inspired by the very cool work of Chris Sickles http://www.rednosestudio.com/

The Hot One Inch Action show is a great show. I was was in it last year with a vector image of teeth. Congrats on getting in to it.

Has the book been published? I like the look of this character, she looks very much alive.

I saw your teeth! They are awesome. If you still have any buttons I’d love to trade you for one.

Thanks Bruce! I’m still in the pitch phase. No picture-book deals yet. One day, hopefully.
