First Log Building Group Meet Up

**

You are invited to the first meet up for the log building group!

**

In this event we will meet each other and converse a few words among ourselves. The meet up is to take place on Spanish Banks near East Concession Cafe. The event is to take place on Saturday, March 07, 2015 starting at 10 am and until 1 pm.

We will be able to attend to logs-as-art area to have a close look and to chainsaw permitted area nearby, where we could practice a few, or more things in log building. Some specialized log building tools and materials will be presented, so there really will be something to learn. We should also be doing some sketching. For serious enthusiasts note taking is strongly encouraged, so bring your notebooks.

There is no cost for this event; though, bringing some pocket cash in case we want to sit down at the cafe for some drinks and maybe talk over a few sketches, is good idea. Event will take place rain, or shine, so please be prepared if weather is rainy.

How to get there:
For those who wish to use Translink, bus No. C19 spins wheels from UBC Loop Bay 15 starting 7:35 am on Saturday, March 07, 2015. The bus turns around to make its way back at West Broadway Avenue and Alma Street area and, you can catch it on Southbound (west side) of Alma Street @ West 6th Avenue, or West 10th Avenue at 7:54 am. Please remember to arrive at least seven (7) minutes early as bus stop times vary. West Broadway at Alma Street is major B-line No. 99 route and, bus No. 9 gets there too. Both 99 B-line and No. 9 bus spin wheels from Commercial Drive Station passing City Hall Terminus of Canada Line; some No. 9 buses come from Boundary Street and East Broadway Avenue.

Coordinates of Spanish Banks East Concession cafe are: 49.276242, -123.214874

Please remember to be prepared for the weather.

EVERYONE IS WELCOME!

Looking forward to meeting everyone there and wish everyone all the best,

Yuriy (Neo) Shevchuk

Sorry, just to clarify.

You’re planning on bringing a chainsaw to Spanish banks to teach/learn log fitting techniques?
I think the police might have issue with that, we should check first.

Sorry @Neo I can’t make this one! I’m out in the mountains that day.Take pictures though! It’s suppose to be a beautiful day on Saturday

It looks like there is one area where you can cut logs, and it’s banned elsewhere.

I actually think if you were to go to this area, you could do some cuts on the logs without bothering anyone.

That’s interesting. I thought this would surely be illegal.

In any case, this date/time doesn’t work for me.

One of my favorite things about vhs is the random stuff people dig up. Thanks, this city is full of surprises.

Sorry Yuriy. Much as firing up a chainsaw on the beach (after beers!) sounds like good fun, I’m committed to be at the 3D printer meetup on Saturday morning. I’ll watch for the next Chainsaw event though.

Hi Rob:

Thank You for the question. I was considering bringing my small chainsaw
suitable for gardening only. There is chainsaw permitted area on Spanish
Banks and logs are usually there to work with. People even take logs from
there. Though, I am not very keen about teaching anyone and I do not have
the expertise, after all gas and equipment costs $. Police wise, I do not
think there will be a problem because the area is designated for log
cutting with chainsaw (noise) and there is log carvings done by some
artist, as long as cutting is done in specific site and during permitted
hours. I do not look at it formally, just as what could we do/try if we go
there - a notch, or two, some patterns, or measurements. Park is for
playing.

All best,

Neo

I did not say I am bringing chainsaw. I specifically did not say operating
chainsaw after drinking beer.

That’s O.K., I can organize further events in the future. It is important for me to keep convenience for people who expressed interest.

Sorry for short notice. I can actually go to work that day; though, I must keep the event for I am organizer.

I intended to go, I’m not sure how to interpret the level of interest here.

I’ve got a 40cc chainsaw I’ll bring, I don’t know anything about carving yet, maybe there’ll be some knowledgable strangers too since there’s an area dedicated to sawing.

looks like Ill be late but well prepared!

There were some friendly hobbyists there, if I understand this right they gather Tuesdays (what time?) at Strathcona Park (857 Malkin Ave) field house (formerly false creek park which links to Maclean Park.via Stathcona Linear Park.

I really need to get a saw file guide because I sharpened one side of teeth much better than the other and went from slow cuts that I could complete to too crooked to finish.

Chainsaw craft seems like the sort of thing that would benefit from having an intuitive or minimalistic measuring system rather than a precise one, such as using string and divisions of the string for length or handspans/sawblades as units of measurement.

Also one of these Oscar portable sawmills is sitting unassembled at the farm. There are too many projects and its been a zero-motive project but now that I’ve been goofing around with the chain saw and band saw it doesn’t seem like an intimidating task to get it going, well the saw part seems simple enough now it’s maneuvering half ton logs that’s the tricky part but I guess they’re only huge for the first few cuts.

Too many projects!

Dear Alchemistletoe:

I am sorry, I did not meet you on Saturday. Things went wrong for me. I went to South Surrey to lay blocks instead. I did not read your posts until now though! Thank You for your interest. What can I say, too many projects can be comfortably accommodated in crafted long house! The saw file guide can be purchased in different locations in North Vancouver and there is a shop on West Boulevard and 45th in Vancouver; though, your best bet is probably Vancouver Flea Market on weekend. I really do not know how to put it all together with log building meet ups, although I could be helpful with many things in log sawing business. I hope nobody gets upset about not making it for, I take transit everyday to South Surrey just to make a few $ and, I really have hard time following the endeavors.

This is an amazing band saw you have there. I can mill such posts, at slower rate and with more effort, with my chain saw though. Can I come work at your farm?

With respect to chainsaw, I say, it depends on the chainsaw and, I would like to tell you more; though, those things if discussed, should be discussed in person.

Wish you all best,

Neo

Hi: I just remembered there is one of a kind carving stone supplier right next to Strathcona Park. Carving stones with wood crafting a long house really makes spectacular structure!

No worries about not making it, I saw your post about possibly working instead and figured it would be worth the trip anyways, it was.

I’d like to learn to use the chainsaw mill guide as even with the sawmill making one side flat before dripping it on the scaffold (?) might make the job more efficient and easy. Just like cutting vegetables that can roll in the kitchen making a flat side first is much safer.

I have access to an electric sharpener but I am not impressed by the fact that you have to remove the chain and it is not portable to the field when you need to sharpen. Maybe the quickest method with the electric sharpener is to own multiple chains, enough for a day.

Another fundamental technique must be securing your work or improvising saw-horses or benches in the field. Perhaps ratchet-straps or chain vise-grips could be used.

From welding experience I know that chain vice grips can be linked together to make longer ones, but anyhow buy the shortest one available, and then use a bicycle chain breaker and old bike chains to lengthen it yourself to save some money since logs will probably have larger diameter than pipes longer would be necessary.
I could be wrong about their utility to woodwork, I’ll probably need to get some anyways so I’ll try it out.

Hello Log Building Enthusiasts:

I am just thinking of setting up another Short and Long Log Building Group Event two, or three weeks from now and I want to know WHAT DATES WOULD WORK BEST FOR YOU?
