We have plenty of WS8211 LEDs that we can look at the digital signals on
We have a proper signal generator somewhere. Haven’t seen it since the
move, come to think of it.
My idea so far is to get each participant to build up a RC oscillator with
a cmos counter like the CD 4060 to see the cap charge/discharge and then
watch the binary divider outputs
Anyone with an existing scope will be welcome to bring it along too

Intro to Oscilloscopes

DescriptionLearn the basics of what oscilloscopes do and how to use them.
Awesome!!! I’ll bring my oscilloscope.
Does anybody have a Oscilloscope Demonstration Board ( signal generator) )?
Such as:
http://www.tequipment.net/Rigol/DS6000-DK/Analog-Demo-Board/
@toptekkie Thanks for doing a workshop on this. Scopes are awesome tools. I guess since people will have them out, I won’t evaluate them for functionality at this time.
If you stumble across any that are defective, would you mind just marking them with masking tape and a sharpie?
At the space last night, it seemed that the nice HP scope was broken. I couldn’t get it to turn on, which is a shame, I love that thing. Has anyone taken a look at it yet?
This might accelerate our need for a new scope.
It just stopped working last week - suspect it may be a fuse but I have
not had a look at it yet
See here for discussion on the “good” scope.
For all the others:
@Logan_Buchy I went through the scope shelve last week really quickly and put some stickers on some of the equipment indicating “keep” or “sell”. I only labelled the super obvious ones, and left all borderline ones unlabeled. Maybe someone else will have some strong feelings about those.
If there is a need to clear out some of the analog stuff, I’d be interested in buying a piece of old gear capable of running in X-Y mode.
This evening I identified 7 scopes (all analog) that work - some needed
minor repairs.
Wednesday 11th I shall use most if not all of these for the intro session
on Oscilloscopes - thereafter we can decide which ones are worth keeping.

@toptekkie If you want to borrow a digital scope for the workshop, you can use mine. It is a Rigol DS1052E
@toptekkie - Do you have a signup sheet or anything for the scope workshop? I saw a note (somewhere) about a 10 person limit and wondered where you were at numer wise…
@packetbob (assume thats how to direct this response) I cannot get my head
around how this discourse/talk/slack and VHS Calendar etc works - so no I
have not setup a sign-up sheet - I could do investigate to do this as a
google form or eventbrite but no idea how to link this the VHS social
outreach.
I assumed that the word of mouth would get sufficient response.
So far I only know of 3 people who have indicated interest.
We have 7 working scopes and I supplemented the probes to have 7 working
tested units.
As we only have one probe per scope I may infact create small groups if a
crowd turns up .

@Logan_Buchy - at this stage I am happy to simply introduce the basic use
of the scope and the analog ones seem to be OK for this.

I plan to come and will bring my aged TDS310 to try to learn how to actually use it…
I plan to bring my DSO Nano, but plan to learn a lot from this.
I’m intereseted and will probably come, but can’t commit until the day of.
I, too, am interested, and am planning to attend.
I’d like to reserve a spot as well. Thank you!
Ill be there too
