3V3/5V Hijacking UART bus between ICs

Recommend a 3V3 and 5V USB ↔ UART device for HiJacking the UART bus between ICs.

A device that can be switched from non-voltage driving READ to voltage driving READ/WRITE.

Any recommendations from?

Bus Pirate?

Is this something that can be done with a couple $2 FTDI dongle clones, and
(physically) slicing the UART signals? They can typically be used with both
3.3 and 5v levels.

Yes, will by splicing the UART signals.

Any recommended FTDI clones?

Or is the Bus Pirate better?

Buspirate would require a lot of configuration, and you would need two of
them.

This kind of thing has always worked well for me:

are what I want, but 60days is too long. Need something in a couple of weeks or less.

ePacket shipping is usually two weeks or so, and only a couple bucks extra.

I also have one I’d be willing to loan you, and unless Jon or Rob took it
back, there was another one attached to the dropbox door.

Mouser ships seeedstudio, sparkfun and adafruit

But these have poor rating due to missing driver.

These have better rating, but I see they all use the same ,CH340 and driver is here USB To Uart 5V/3V3 | Seeed Studio Wiki

Mac OSX drivers are flaky or hard to install for the CH340 IIRC. Works fine
in Windows or Linux, and there were some workarounds to get them working
with Mac

I assume you mean between 2 ICs at most, or are you looking for a multi-drop bus ?

I should have one in my locker, in a clear plastic tub

I’ve had good luck using the CP2104 USB/serial from Silicon Labs. There is also the GUC232A (aka IOGEAR) which has been around for decades. GUC232A drivers are available from Aten. As for the CH340, I was able to find a reasonable Mac driver from Jiangsu Qinheng Co.
